An Earthquake (also known as an earthquake or tremor) has produced the result of a sudden release of energy in the earth's crust, the seismic waves. Earthquakes are recorded with a seismometer, also known as a seismograph.
The moment magnitude (or a report and mostly obsolete Richter size) of an earthquake is conventionally reported, with power 3 or less for most perceptible earthquakes of magnitude 7 and severe damage to large areas. Intensity of the vibrations on the Modified Mercalli scale measured.
